By Audrey Gordon and Sam Miller, JHRTS Co-Presidents
JHRTS finished its year with a strong line-up of events and elections leading to a new board and co-presidents which will be announced shortly.
On May 31st, JHRTS hosted a panel on Creating Scripted Television featuring some of the top writing executive producers working today, including Bob Daily (DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES), Mara Brock Akil (THE GAME), Darlene Hunt (THE BIG C), and Jeff Kline (TRANSFORMERS: PRIME). Moderated by Nick Pepper (Head of Drama, Mark Gordon Co.), the event featured advice for aspiring writers while detailing the day-to-day responsiblities of show creators and showrunners. Over a hundred and fifty people came to CAA to hear from some of their heroes.
Additionally, in May we had a roundtable at CAA with Gary Randall. Executive Producer of THE GLADES, Gary has had a widely varied career which includes stints as an agent, producer, writer and director. Gary talked about the importance of being bold in a competitive industry and how going the extra mile for something makes all the difference. Twenty JHRTS members listened to Gary talk about his career and received advice from him on how to move from assistant to someone who has an assistant.
Our gathering at The Wellesbourne on Pico was another successful event—Admittedly nervous around 8:30pm that no one was going to show, I was pleasantly surprised by how packed with TV assistants, coordinators, and networkers the space became around 9pm. I witnessed a lot of handshaking and laughing and even some members campaigning for a spot on the new board of JHRTS (our board nominations were taking place at the time).
We are proud to announce 22 new members to our board and wish them a great year with membership growth, memorable panels, fabulous roundtables, and most importantly, a successful holiday party in December.
Our year as co-presidents was one for the books and we are so thankful we had the opportunity to work with the group of TV up and comers on our current board. A genuinely rewarding experience for all. We will remember the time fondly.
