ABOUT THE COMPETITION
The Junior Hollywood Radio and Television Society (JHRTS) is thrilled to present the return of the JHRTS Script Competition, seeking outstanding scripts from JHRTS members.
The judging committee is comprised of previous and current members of the Los Angeles and New York JHRTS Executive Boards, who work at leading entertainment companies.
Winners will receive the Title:
JHRTS Script Competition Winner – Feature Drama
JHRTS Script Competition Winner – Feature Comedy
JHRTS Script Competition Winner – 1/2 Hour Pilot
JHRTS Script Competition Winner – Hour Pilot
Winners will receive:
A general meeting with an executive or representative from companies such as Mosaic, Writ-Large, Stampede Ventures, Fremantle, and Blackmaled + Other prizes! (see “Prizes” page for details).

CATEGORIES
- Scripts must be categorized in one of the following ways:
- Feature – Comedy
- Feature – Drama
- 1/2 Hour Pilot or Multi-Camera Comedy
- 1 Hour Pilot
GENERAL GUIDELINES
- Scripts can only be submitted by current JHRTS members. Membership must be active both at point of submission and through June 2020.
- Co-Written Scripts are accepted with a maximum of two (2) writers, provided that all contributing and named writers meet the membership requirement above.
- All submitted scripts must be original and unproduced projects.
- Only one (1) script may be submitted into the competition, by any writer or writing team. Multiple submissions will not be reviewed. Scripts submitted in previous years of the JHRTS Pilot Script Competition will not be considered.
- Feature scripts must be entered for either Comedy or Drama, and Pilot scripts as either half-hour/multi-cam or hour. The genre must be clearly noted in the submission email (see SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS below for details).
- All submissions, once received, will be graded blind and judges’ feedback will not be released to writers.
- Submissions for the script competition may not be sent to judges or any member of the JHRTS Executive Board directly. Doing so will disqualify you from the competition.
- Once you submit your script to the email provided once you register, you will receive a confirmation email that we received your script. If you have any questions, send them to the email provided at the bottom of this page. Please double-check all information is correct and requirements are met before you submit.
- Winners will receive the title of 2020 JHRTS Script Competition Winner – [insert category].
- Winners will have the opportunity to have a general meeting with an Executive from a Production or Management Company. There is no guarantee of representation or progress to production language. The prizes are subject to change at any time.
SCORING PROCESS
- All scripts will be scored from a 1-10 on the following criteria:
- Characterization
- Plot/Structure
- Premise
- Dialogue
- Writing/Voice
- Round 1:
- All scripts will be read once by hired readers. Scripts with a score above a 7 will move on to the next round.
- Round 2:
- A different reader from the JHRTS Board will read the scripts that have moved on. The scores will be compared to those from Round 1.
- Any scripts whose two scores aren’t comparable or in the same range will receive an additional read.
- Scripts with a score of 7 (average) or above will move on to Round 3.
- Round 3:
- From the remaining scripts, the Script Competition Committee will decide the winners and runners-up in each category.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- LENGTH REQUIREMENTS: Submitted scripts must abide by the following length maximums (title page excluded from page count). In the event that your submission exceeds this limit, your script will not be graded.
- FEATURE FILMS: 90-120 pages
- 1/2 HOUR PILOT: 20-45 pages
- MULTI-CAM COMEDY: 40-60 pages (double-spaced)
- HOUR PILOT: 50-65 pages
- RELEASE FORM: All submitting writers must complete a Release Form. Individuals submitting as a writing team must each sign an individual Release Form. Please click HERE to download the form.
- ATTACHMENTS: Submissions must have three (3) attachments:
- Completed Release Form(s)
- Two (2) copies of the script being submitted for consideration:
- Script with the following Contact Information:
- Project Title
- Writer’s Name
- E-mail Address
- Phone Number
- Date
- Script without Contact Info
- Title page with JUST project title and date, without any markings or headers indicating where the script originated. There should be no indication throughout any of the script as to its author(s).
- Script with the following Contact Information:
- FORMAT: All submissions must be sent in PDF format, written in industry-standard size 12 Courier font. All other formats will not be accepted.
- TWO-PART ENTRY: As of 2020, all submissions must be emailed to the email address provided when you register, accompanied by a fully filled out Google Form detailing your entry. Fill out Google Form HERE. Once all entered information has been submitted via Google Form, please proceed to point number 6 below.
- EMAIL: Submissions are to be emailed only to the email address you receive in your “Confirmation Email” when you register for the event. Below are examples of what your subject line should look like:
